Garmin Nuvi 350 Review

The Garmin Nuvi 350 is the perfect GPS device if you want an "out of the box" simplicity. The very slim and sleek design is perfectly carried in your pocket, which makes it especially great for business trips and use in rental cars. You could even use it for hiking or walking through strange cities, as the light weight makes it very easy to pack around.

The Nuvi 350 comes with many extras that come in very handy while on vacation or business trips. Although many of the maps are a bit outdated, the Garmin Nuvi 350 GPS still makes for a wonderful GPS device, as far as functionality, and it comes preloaded with City Navigator NT street maps to get you started. The touch screen is great, and features an anti-glare screen that helps you keep directions clear even in direct sunlight. The inclusion of an Mp3 player and an audio book player also makes the Nuvi 350 well worth the money. The Nuvi 350 has an SD card memory slot to upload newer maps, audio file, and pcitures. The voice navigation feature is valuable for keeping your eyes on the road when driving to a new place.

If what you really need is a great, compact designed GPS device that will effectively get you to where you need to go, with a few great extras thrown in, then the Garmin Nuvi 350 GPS is right up your alley. It is highly dependable, low priced, and with the added features and great satellite connection, you really can't go wrong with the Nuvi 350.

Garmin Nuvi 250 GPS is Beginner-Friendly

Not only is the 200 series great for beginner's, it is affordable. Targeted at the budget conscious buyer, the Nuvi 250 lacks all the slick bells and whistles, but it performs best at what it should - navigation. After all, that is what a global positioning system was intended to do. Some of the common specifications of the Garmin Nuvi 250 GPS are:

  • Pre-loaded NAVTEQ maps for the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico.
  • 3.5" color touch display
  • Turn-by-turn instructions
  • Approximately 6 million Points of Interest
  • Photo viewer
  • Calculator
  • World clock
  • Currency and Unit converter
Here are some features that you might want, but the Garmin Nuvi 250 lacks:

  • Text to Speech
  • Bluetooth
  • Traffic Updates
  • MP3 Player
  • Headphone or Audio outlet
Here is what comes in the box when you buy the 250:

  • Nuvi 250
  • Windshield suction cup
  • 12V cigarette lighter power adapter
  • Dashboard disk for mounting
  • Setup Guide
There are two main groups that provide mapping data: NAVTEQ and TeleAtlas. Fortunately for Nuvi fans, NAVTEQ is far superior to TeleAtlas. The bad news is that Garmin does not offer free map updates to its buyers. You will likely have to shell out over $100 to get a current map update for your GPS unit.

The routing engine in the Garmin Nuvi 250 GPS is also very solid. The routing engine is what helps make decisions in the route that it suggests to get from one point to another. This Garmin unit tested better than the TomTom ONE and the Magellan Maestro. This coupled with the excellent NAVTEQ mapping data provides a very solid performer at navigation tasks. Let's also not forget the best part of the Nuvi 250 and that is its unrivaled ease of use. Your tech-challenged grandmother should be able to operate this GPS unit.

How to Choose a GPS Navigation System

One of the best advantages of having a portable GPS unit is that users can easily travel with the system and use them all over North America, Europe and other programmable destinations. The systems can be easily used in rental cars to help navigate unfamiliar cities, to track distance in altitude on hiking trips and at home around town. The convenience of use is increased by its compact, light-weight design. The unit is very easy to take from one vehicle to another when you need to.

Ease-of-use

Many GPS users find their device extremely helpful when they are trying to navigate their car to a new location along an unfamiliar route. As a result, they need clear, concise direction to provide the proper trip information. A large screen for easy viewing and an intuitive user-interface also help drivers to receive accurate trip information and still operate the vehicle safely. Please take care to watch the road not the GPS unit. I recommend the GPS units that have voice directions as well as visual.

Features & Software

Many users rely on GPS systems as the sole source of navigation for a trip. As such, consumers should look for quality products with high-speed processors to ensure real-time accuracy and efficient, quick map development. It is also important to look for products with large memories support millions of points of interest (POIs) in order to receive accurate map development for the exact route needed.

Waterproof or water resistant

If you are going to use the GPS for kayaking and canoeing and the GPS is water resistant, a special see-through dry bag made especially for a GPS has to be used. Water resistant will be acceptable for all other types of outdoor adventure activities such as hiking and backpacking.

Batteries and battery life

What type of batteries are used with the GPS? Are they normal rechargeable AA batteries or are they special manufacturer batteries? Extra batteries must be carried along at all times just in case. How long do the batteries last? Is there a battery saver mode (sleep mode)? Do you have to turn the GPS on and off each time to save the batteries? How long can the GPS remain on without turning the receiver off before the battery power runs out?
